How To Transition Your Skincare Routine For Winter!

The weather is changing and so should your skincare routine! Read on to know how to transition your skincare routine for winter so your skin is ready to face the winter skin challenges with ease.

Winter is a delightful time of the year (especially if you’re fond of hot coffee, fluffy sweaters, good books, and snuggling up in blankets), but the not-so-delightful weather itself can pose real threats to your skin.

With a drop in the humidity and temperature, skin becomes dull, dry and easily irritated so it’s crucial to give your skin some extra TLC during the winters. When you’re outside in the harsh winter conditions, your skin is exposed to chilling temperatures with virtually no moisture available to replenish the lost moisture.

A proper winter skin care routine can address all of the winter skin problems you want to avoid.
All you might need is a few simple swaps and additions in order to keep your skin hydrated and nourished.

While nothing drastic, you need to ensure that just like everything else, your skin makes a smooth transition. so, here is how you can switch your Skincare Routine from Monsoon to Winter.

SKINCARE SWAPS TO MAKE THIS WINTER

Change up your SKincare routine for winter

  • Swap your Foaming Cleanser for Hydrating Cleanser

Changing up your cleansers should be one of the first things you do when the weather turns colder. Foaming/ Exfoliating Cleansers can be too harsh for your skin so don’t aim for squeaky clean feeling and cut down the heavy-duty cleansers. Cleansing creams, light gels, balms, and oils can effectively wash the skin while keeping the skin hydrated and not disrupting the skin barrier. Some of my personal favorites are Dear Klairs Rich Moist Foaming Cleanser, COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser and Etude House Soon Jung 6.5 pH Whip Cleanser.

  • Swap your Gel Moisturizer for Heavy Cream Moisturizer

You might notice that due to the dry air your skin feels drier too. In this case, that oil-free gel moisturizer you were using all summer won’t do the job anymore. Consider switching to a lotion or heavier consistency cream with rich formula ingredients like Shea Butter, Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, Vitamin E, and Ceramides, which are key ingredients in combating dryness and inflammation e.g. Dear Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream, Purito Centella Unscented Recovery Cream. Remember to apply your moisturizer morning and night on damp skin.

  • Swap your Astringent for a Hydrating Toner

Stop using alcohol-based toners or toners with astringent properties since they make the skin matte and oil free. Hydrating Toners are an overlooked step in skincare but it makes a huge difference, it adds an extra layer of hydration and also helps the products to penetrate better. After cleansing, use a toner and immediately apply a serum or moisturizer while the skin is still damp. To name a few, Purito Centella Unscented Toner, Dear Klairs Supple Preparation Hydrating Toner, Isntree Hyaluronic Acid, I’m From Rice Toner works really well during the winters.

  • Swap your Clay Mask for Sleeping Mask

Charcoal/ Clay Masks that used to be your summer favorites might not work for you now as it takes away the natural oils and makes the skin super dry so start using a Sleeping Mask / Overnight Mask occasionally for extra nourishment. You can try COSRX Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask if your skin is extremely dry/flaky.

SKINCARE ADDITIONS TO MAKE THIS WINTER

  • Incorporate a Facial Oil

Transitioning seasons is also a good time to give your skincare routine a full check and see if you need any extra products. For instance, facial oils are a great way to get some more hydration in winter and are great for a ‘warm’ feeling. You can add a few drops to your regular moisturizer too.

  • Give your eyes a much-needed eye cream

As you probably know, the skin around your eyes is extremely thin. So, during winter, this area of the face is especially affected by the harsh winter conditions. If you don’t normally apply an eye cream, winter is the time to do so. Look for eye creams with peptides, ceramides and fruit oils like Avocado Oil. Dear Klairs Fundamental Eye Butter and Cosrx Advanced Snail Peptide Cream are formulated with some effective ingredients so you might give it a try.

  • Layer your Skincare

Just like you need to layer your clothing to keep our body warm in the cooler months, your skin needs the same to prevent over-drying. Layering allows you to address multiple skin concerns with different products at the same time. Using a Hydrating serum is always a good idea and layer it up with your favorite moisturizer to lock in the goodness. My winter skin adores multiple layers of hydrating toners, essences and serums that keeps my skin plump.
Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Essence, I’m From Ginseng Serum, Dear Klairs Fundamental Watery Oil Drops and I’m From Mugwort Essence works for all skin types.

ADDITIONAL THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • Keep a check on Exfoliation

Over-exfoliating your skin (especially during the colder months) can cause excessive dryness. However, make sure to keep an exfoliator in your routine once a week to slough away those dry, dead skin cells and reveal bright skin even in the dead of winter. Dear Klairs Youthful Glow Sugar Mask is a good option since it’s a gentle exfoliator and does the job well.

  • Sunscreen is mandatory

Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean you skip out on SPF application. UVA & UVB rays are damaging to skin all year round so apply your SPF every morning. The sun is equally strong and damaging in cooler temperatures! The harmful UV rays emitted break through cloud cover and can still harm your skin if you’re not protected. Make sure to cover the whole face and neck or any other exposed areas. Three finger sunscreen rule works perfectly if you are unsure of the right amount to be used. I highly recommend the Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel which has all the right ingredients to lock the moisture in and tackle dehydration.

  • Cut down on shower time & temperature

While winter weather might sound like the optimal time for a long, hot bath, try to resist the urge but prolonged contact with hot water can strip the skin of its natural moisture, leaving you even drier than you were before. Also, immediately after the shower, while your skin is damp, apply rich moisturizers to lock in hydration.

  • Products to avoid in Winters

In winter, it’s best to avoid harsh ingredient so that your skin doesn’t suffer because this weather can dry out your skin and even damage the skin barrier so better to cut off physical scrubs, clay masks, alcohol-based toners, heavily fragranced products or essential oils.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Winter isn’t everyone’s favorite season, and it’s probably not your skin’s favorite season either. However, that doesn’t mean winter has to wreak havoc on you or your skin. Make the best of the cold weather with a hydrating and barrier repairing winter skin care routine.
