Double Cleansing basics and How to do it Right!

You may be a beauty product junkie who knows the A to Z of serums, moisturizers, and miracle creams but if you’re bad at the cleansing game, your total-skincare routine is only halfway there. What Is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-step method of washing your face. The first step is done with an oil-based cleanser, followed by a water-based cleanser. The idea is that you should remove the makeup, dirt, sebum, and pollution with an oil-based cleanser first to actually lift the grime and then cleanse with a gentle foaming or water-based cleanser to further cleanse the pores and wash it all away.

What are the benefits of Double Cleansing?

There are two main benefits to double cleansing. First, it ensures every last trace of makeup, dirt, and oil is removed from your skin. Plus any skincare products you use subsequently are likely to penetrate the skin deeper.

The benefit of double cleansing is that the first cleanser will break down any makeup, remove dirt and excess oils, and clean your skin. The second cleanser will address your particular skin type or concern and should have ingredients to hydrate, smooth, or exfoliate and treat acne. Doing both steps will assure that any treatment and moisturizing is not done in vain.

Do You Need to Double Cleanse in the Morning and at Night?

The short answer? No. For most people, double cleansing at night is the perfect balance to avoid over-cleansing and cause irritation. Especially as you are not typically removing makeup in the morning. However, even if you don’t wear makeup regularly, it’s still important to make sure you’re double cleansing at the end of the day.

How to Double Cleanse Right

Cleanse according to your skin type

Choose an oil-based cleanser and a water-based cleanser that is specifically formulated for your skin type. For example, oily skin needs products that are non-greasy and light, while dry skin needs a cleanser that has hydrating and moisturizing properties.

Massage In Your First Cleanse

Get down deep with your first cleanse and massage it in. Take your time with an oil, cream or balm (depending on your skin’s needs) and use your knuckles and fingers to get into the muscles, always lifting upwards. Not only will this help boost radiance, but it will also encourage lymphatic drainage and the removal of excess toxins. Include the neck too when you do this. It often gets neglected but is still in need of extra attention, just like your face.

Use warm water and a washcloth

Wash off both rounds of your cleanser with warm water and a damp cloth. This will ensure the skin is fully cleansed and your pores are all closed. It’s also key you apply your cleansing oil or cream to moist skin as the ingredients from your products will sink in much deeper. You can try adding a little face scrub to your second cleanser too if your complexion is feeling dull or in need of a pick-me-up.
